”Explanation”
The host gene PRNP encodes PRPc which has an unknown function. It gets converted to prion protein PRPsc by PRPsc serving as a template. PRPsc works as a template best when the amino acid sequence is conserved between the two proteins (which acts as a species barrier) PBVD 7th Ed. p 293
