Choose the correct answer
Why are cats susceptible to acetaminophen toxicity?
”Explanation”
Toxicity arises from NAPQI metabolite from CYP metabolism. In most species 95% of acetaminnophen gets processed through phase II pathways but 5% and excess levels get processed by CYP2E producing NAPQI. In cats however the phase II mechanisms can get overwehelmed because of lower glucuronyol transferase levels making more drug go through the CYP2E pathway. This results in ROS and lipid peroxidation.
