The host gene PRNP encodes PRP^c which has an unknown function. It gets converted to prion protein PRP^sc by PRP^sc serving as a template. PRP^sc works as a template best when the amino acid sequence is conserved between the two proteins (which acts as a species barrier) PBVD 7th Ed. p 293
